A Tour of Our One-of-a-Kind Greenhouse

Built from Vintage Windows and French Doors

When we decided to replace our aging kit greenhouse, we knew we wanted something truly special. Something with character, charm, and a story to tell. The footprint was already set. Thanks to the brick paver floor and raised landscape bricks weโ€™d built years before, but the vision was wide open.

A small white greenhouse with glass windows and a pitched roof sits on a brick patio in a sunny backyard, surrounded by trees and plants. A chicken coop is visible nearby.

A lucky scroll through Facebook Marketplace led me to a set of vintage French doors. When we went to pick them up, โ€œHandyโ€ spotted two more sets and immediately dreamed up a greenhouse vestibule.

From there, we found ourselves in a strangerโ€™s cellar filled wall-to-wall with old windows, carefully hunting for just the right sizes. With โ€œHandyโ€ doing the math in his head (because of course he did), we pieced together eight matching windows, two more that paired perfectly, and a design that would wrap the greenhouse around these salvaged treasures.

The Vision Behind the Greenhouse

Rebuilding with vintage windows had been a dream for years. Iโ€™d pinned countless greenhouse inspiration photos on Pinterest, imagining something charming yet functional. A space that could hold heat through the winter so I could start seeds indoors without taking over the guest room or my office.

When I mentioned the idea to โ€œHandy,โ€ I braced for a quick no, but to my surprise, he was on board almost immediately. Thatโ€™s when I knew this dream might actually become reality.

The Hunt for Vintage Treasures

My first stop for unique pieces is always Facebook Marketplace, and it didnโ€™t take long to find both French doors and vintage windows. Amazingly, not far from each other, about an hour and a half north in Wisconsin.

The French doors came from a dusty old barn. The seller had three sets, and โ€œHandyโ€ decided to take them all so he could create the vestibule he was already envisioning.

The windows came from a suburban home with a cellar packed floor to ceiling with vintage and antique glass. โ€œHandyโ€ measured, I held the flashlight, and together we sorted until we found eight windows that matched and two more that were nearly identical. I couldnโ€™t quite picture the final result, but I trusted his processโ€”heโ€™s never let me down yet.

The Crystal Chandelier

Iโ€™ve always dreamed of having a crystal chandelier, but our home just didnโ€™t have the right spot for one. The greenhouse, however, felt like the perfect place for a touch of elegance among the rustic charm. Another Marketplace find, it now sparkles beautifully in the sunlight.

Designing Inspiration & Planning

On a weekend trip to Michigan, we spent hours discussing what the greenhouse might look like. Iโ€™ll admitโ€”at one point, we had a silly argument over a tiny design detail (weโ€™ve since laughed about it).

This is our old greenhouse. What a mess after the winter!

In the end, trusting โ€œHandyโ€™sโ€ vision was the best choice. The finished space is more beautiful than I ever imagined.

Stepping Inside โ€“ The Greenhouse Tour

From the outside, the greenhouseโ€™s vintage French doors create a welcoming entry. The vestibule adds depth and charm while also providing a buffer from the elements. Inside, the salvaged windows flood the space with natural light, making it feel warm and inviting.

The brick paver floorโ€”kept from the original greenhouseโ€”adds texture and warmth, while the raised base of landscape bricks grounds the structure. The chandelier glimmers overhead, casting light across potting benches and plant shelves. Itโ€™s a space thatโ€™s both functional and enchanting. It’s perfect for nurturing seedlings or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee surrounded by greenery.

Lessons Learned

We discovered the hard way that skipping primer on old wood leads to paint bleed-through. We had originally imagined a rustic, chippy look, but the brown bleed wasnโ€™t the look we wanted.

Lesson learned: always start with a good primer when painting vintage windows.

Final Thoughts

What began as an idea to replace an old kit greenhouse has become what “Handy” now refers to as the Conservatory. A place thatโ€™s uniquely ours, built with salvaged treasures and plenty of love.

It took longer than we expected, but every moment was worth it.
