Design Inspired by Nancy Meyers Movies

Who doesn’t love the kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, and gardens of a Nancy Meyer Movie?

The settings of these movies are the inspiration that many use when decorating their homes and creating their gardens. It doesn’t hurt that her movies are charming and are some of my favorites.

I’m sharing my design tips inspired by Nancy Meyers Movies.

Nancy Meyer movies are famous for their kitchens. However, I find that all of the living spaces, both indoor and outdoor, are equally as lovely.

Here are some of my favorites!

It’s Complicated

It’s interesting that Meryl Streep (Jane Adler) has contracted Steve Martin (Architect, Adam Schaffer) to build an addition to her home that includes a new primary bedroom-bathroom, and new kitchen. I wouldn’t change a thing in her current kitchen.

Design Tips

This kitchen is proof that a white kitchen with marble countertops is a classic look that doesn’t go out of style. Notice that the pops of color in the fabrics are pulled from the copper pot.

You can have different kinds of dishware and it looks unified on open shelving by keeping them all white.

Something’s Gotta Give

For me, Nancy Meyers’ moments in this movie are the office that Diane Keaton (Erica Barry) uses to write her books and the living space.

If you look up the style coined “Grandmother Coastal” you will find photos of this movie, set in the Hamptons. The blue and white beachy home has 3,000 books on the set.

I’m channeling my own “Something’s Gotta Give” with white slipcovered furniture and lots of blue and white

Design Tips

White slipcovered furniture gives your home a coastal vibe and you can keep it clean because the slipcovers can be washed. Pair that with blue and white ticking chairs, which will give the “Coastal Grandma” vibe.

My favorite light bulbs will give your home that cozy glow that you see in this movie.

The Holiday

Probably my favorite Nancy Meyer Movie is “The Holiday” starring Kate Winslow, Cameron Diaz, and Jude Law.

The movie is set in a cozy cottage in England and a modern home in Los Angeles. While I appreciate the modern look of the LA home, I have fallen in love with the English cottage.

The cozy floral “Shabby Chic” look of the living room and the sweet little kitchen with a wood-burning fireplace are things that dreams are made of, at least in my opinion.

Design Tips

For this Shabby Chic Cottage look you want to incorporate light florals, Nancy Meyer’s signature blue and white, along with plenty of books.

Use textures like chunky throws, woven baskets, and white ironstone for that cottage core feel.

Nancy Meyers

Nancy Jane Meyers is an American filmmaker. She has written, produced, and directed many critically and commercially successful films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Private Benjamin (1980). Her film Baby Boom (1987) was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. She co-wrote Father of the Bride (1991), Father of the Bride Part II (1995), and both wrote and directed The Parent Trap (1998), What Women Want (2000), Something’s Gotta Give (2003), The Holiday (2006), It’s Complicated (2009), and The Intern (2015).

Father of the Bride

Another family fav in our house! Our Annie got married in our backyard so this movie was on loop in 2021.

Even though this movie is from the early 90s, it’s still classic. The living room and kitchen were an inspiration to me in the 90s. There are still things about that house that inspire me.

We recently were in California to celebrate our son’s marriage. Visiting the Father of the Bride house was on our bucket list.

Like many of the other movies, the Banks Family lives in a traditional-style home; featuring a white kitchen and a light-colored living space. I noticed copper pots and pans again in this movie. Nina Banks has a KitchenAid Mixer on her kitchen island. She also sets an ironstone pitcher filled with flowers down on an end table in her living room. The sofas in the living room are slipcovered in white and the pillows are floral.

This movie starring Diane Keaton, Steve Martin, Kimberly Williams Paisley, Martin Short, and George Newbern, will forever be ingrained in our hearts.

Design Tips

Mixing new with old is a classic “Nancy Meyers” look. Filling an old ironstone pitcher with flowers is classic. Mixing some antique wood, like your coffee table or end tables with a white sofa is sophisticated yet comfortable.

I’m obsessed with the island in this movie and layering a KitchenAid with copper pots and pans, and baskets full of fruit gives it that “we live in our home” look.
