An Old World Christmas: Vintage Charm and Timeless Elegance

There’s something magical about creating an Old World Christmas Vibe that tells a story – not just of the current moment, but of generations past. This year, I’m embracing a Nostalgic Christmas feel that celebrates vintage treasures, muted color palettes, and the warmth of collected memories.

A cozy interior features a rustic wooden tree sculpture with an Old World Christmas charm, as a small bird figurine nestles on it. Nearby, a blue and white teapot under a glass dome sits gracefully on a wooden stand. A framed painting of a winter church scene hangs on the wall, completing the festive ambiance.

The Living Space: A Vintage Storybook Christmas

My living room is a love letter to vintage Christmas memories. Vintage books – their pages yellowed and edges worn – become more than just decor; they’re storytellers. Stacked carefully with brown transferware and gleaming ironstone pitchers, they create vignettes that whisper of Christmases long ago. Sprinkle in a little flow blue China and you have a Christmas that tells a story

A tall, slender Christmas tree with sparse branches is adorned in an Old World Christmas theme with blue, gold, and brown ornaments. Warm white lights illuminate the tree in a cozy room featuring wooden ceilings, white pillars, and a view of the kitchen.

Color Palette & Ornaments

  • Colors: Rich browns, soft blues, warm coppers, and all the shades of white
  • Ornaments: A carefully curated collection that blends vintage and new
  • Textures: Linen pillow, soft knit throws, ceramic transferware, smooth ironstone

My trees have ornaments carefully selected to create a cohesive look that feels both intentional and casually collected. Copper, blue, brown and beige glass baubles along with vintage glass icicle ornaments catch the light.

I’ve never used these colors before and I’m so thrilled at how it makes my house so cozy.

A cozy dining room evokes the charm of an Old World Christmas, featuring a wooden table with white slipcovered chairs, a Christmas tree, and festive garlands on the walls. A sideboard with lit lamps and a floral centerpiece completes the warm, inviting setting.

On another tree I simply have wooden dye cut snowflakes to keep the glow of the tree the focal point.

Both trees are adorned with slim velvet ribbon bows; a ribbon tinsel of sorts.

The Office: French Country Serenity

In the cozy living room, an Old World Christmas vibe fills the air with a tree adorned in blue and silver ornaments, crowned by a star topper. Nearby, bookshelves and a cushioned chair accompany a small menorah, all warmly lit and festively adorned.

In my office, a departure from the living room’s vintage brown tones – a French country-inspired blue and white Christmas takes center stage. This space feels like a breath of fresh Provençal air, with delicate blue and white ornaments that evoke the charm of a French countryside Christmas.

French Country Elements

  • Blue baubles along with blue and white chinoiserie ornaments
  • Delicate snowflake ornaments
  • Subtle, elegant decorations
  • Soft, romantic lighting

The Primary Bedroom: Traditional Elegance

Our primary bedroom embraces a more traditional Christmas palette – the classic combination of cranberry and white. This space feels like a warm embrace, with soft textiles and timeless decorations that speak to traditional Christmas memories.

In a cozy living room, an Old World Christmas tree stands beautifully decorated, adorned with glowing lights and festive ornaments. It complements the rustic interior, complete with a stack of firewood and white cabinets under a wooden ceiling.

  • Cranberry red accents
  • Crisp white linens
  • Soft, warm lighting
  • Subtle holiday greenery

The Greenhouse: Nature’s Christmas

The greenhouse becomes a sanctuary of natural beauty – a tree adorned with dried hydrangeas and grasses. This space celebrates the raw beauty of the winter landscape, bringing the outside in with a minimalist, organic approach to holiday decorating.

A festive Christmas tree adorned with white and bronze ornaments stands illuminated inside a rustic greenhouse, exuding an Old World Christmas charm. Two large brown paper stars hang on either side, while a cozy checkered blanket is draped over a chair nearby.

Natural Decorating Elements

  • Dried hydrangeas and grasses decorate the tree
  • Fun paper lunch bag snowflakes at some whimsy
  • A soft blue and white throw adds some warmth and more texture
  • Neutral color palette

Tips for Creating Your Own Old World Christmas

  1. Start with What You Have: Use existing vintage pieces as your foundation
  2. Create Intentional Vignettes: Group items with purpose and meaning
  3. Mix Textures: Combine smooth ironstone with rough book pages
  4. Tell a Story: Each decoration should feel like it has a history
  5. Embrace Imperfection: Vintage decor is about character, not perfection

Sourcing Vintage Christmas Decor

Where to Find Treasures

  • Antique stores
  • Estate sales
  • Vintage markets
  • Family heirlooms – Online vintage marketplaces

What to Look For

  • Vintage books
  • Brown transferware
  • Ironstone pieces
  • Aged glass ornaments
  • Blue and white china

Don’t be afraid to mix old with new. I honestly don’t collect many old ornaments because they can be an investment and I change my theme each year. Clear glass however can be used for most of my themes.

The Heart of a Vintage Christmas

More than just decorations, this approach to Christmas is about creating a feeling. It’s about surrounding yourself with pieces that tell a story, that connect you to memories both old and new. Each vintage book, each carefully placed transferware plate, each softly glowing ornament becomes a testament to the enduring magic of Christmas.

While my memories of Christmas at my Grandparents old farm in Wisconsin are few, I do remember it being simple. The Christmas Tree freshly cut in the corner of the main room was Christmas. There wasn’t anything else around the house that I recall. But the smell of fresh baked bread and potato sausage for Christmas Eve are carved in my memory.

This year, my home isn’t just decorated for Christmas – it’s telling a story of love, memory, and timeless beauty. I will be baking bread and cooking potato sausage on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas, from my vintage-adorned home to yours!

Peace and Love,

  7. Donna Shelley says:

All very lovely. Where in a small house do you store all those Christmas trees and decorations once the holidays are finished? We live in an apartment with very limited storage. I have been limping along with a small, three foot, artificial tree because I have just enough room for it in my clothing closet! To say I envy your space is an understatement. Happy holidays!

    1. We don’t have a garage or basement either! So storage is a huge issue. We have a very unusual situation in that we live on water and we have a boat house that has a roof with attic space. This is where I store our holiday decor.

  8. Lynn I love your old world Christmas theme! Seeing all your beautiful trees put a smile on my face! I also absolutely LVOED the tree in your greenhouse…you have inspired me. Now I just need a greenhouse! Ha! Merry CHristmas!
