“Spring is in the Air” is an odd comment in February from someone who lives in the Chicago suburbs; especially when it snowed almost all day on Wednesday. It was so pretty and it covered up all the muddy spots in the yard! I can feel the change in the air and my thoughts are all about Spring, daffodils and tulips.
It’s interesting how being an urban farmer, you have a new-found interest in weather details. It was 56 degrees today and we have about 45 more minutes of day light than we did in January. These little details mean our chickens are more anxious to stick their beaks out of the coop and best of all their egg production is up. We harvested four eggs today from our lovely ladies. We haven’t had that many in one day since the fall. They need day light to help with the egg production so that little extra sunlight is working it’s magic. Colder weather is inevitable before spring and a snow storm even into April is not unheard. I’ll take what I can get and I’m thrilled that its getting closer to warmer weather.
The beauty for me is that I finally have enough eggs to boil some, have a lovely frittata for lunch and an awesome Sunday brunch. Things are looking “Sunny-Side Up”. Life is good and spring is right around the corner!
